Housing

Housing
There is no need to sign up for housing. All characters will be provided free housing in both the Eastern and Western kingdoms, to allow for easy travel between the two. Free housing is only available in Tokyo and Kyoto, but characters are free to find their own accommodation in any city once they find a job. All refugees will continue to receive food stipends regardless of where they live.
All accommodations include indoor plumbing, basic steam-powered appliances (fridge, stove, rice cooker, etc), a black and white television, and internet access. Think: old-timey with a dash of anachronisms.

Refugee Apartments Nihonbashi, Tokyo
Most of the refugees will be placed in one or two bedroom apartments on the edge of Nihonbashi. These rooms come fully furnished, and are scattered around the district in clusters to encourage intermingling with the native populace. They're a little small, but fairly luxurious considering the location, and include heating and cooling systems! If you're lucky, you might even snag one with a western-style bed instead of a futon!![]()
Refugee Shared Houses Little Edo, Tokyo
Those who've decided they wish to live in groups of three or more will be provided old homes in Little Edo. It doesn't take more than a glance to realize these homes must have been abandoned at some point before being used for refugees, with some odd furnishings sometimes left behind. While the buildings could use some heavy TLC and have no built-in heating or cooling systems, there's plenty of space, and even a private little garden!![]()
Refugee Dorms Yoshiwara, Tokyo
And those who think they might struggle with settling in (or who simply aren't so lucky to get an apartment) will be assigned to a dormitory in Yoshiwara. One or two people share a small room with communal kitchens and living areas, and a private toilet. As of February '22, all rooms now have advanced heating and cooling systems, and a communal bathing area with private showers and a shared bath can be found in every dorm building. These dorms are strictly for refugees, and despite the recent renovations, are still by far the most run down. But surely getting to live in the exclusive Yoshiwara Entertainment district makes it all worth it, right?![]()
Yokohama City Apartments Kannai, Yokohama
Those who wish to work in Yokohama without the commute may find it easier to rent their own apartment in the city! These apartments do not come furnished and will not be paid for by the government. While normally very expensive, housing in Yokohama is significantly cheaper if you work with the Port Market, but only apartments and dorm-style homes are available.

Refugee Apartments Higashiyama, Kyoto
Located in a designated apartment building just for refugees, these apartments consist only of studios and one bedrooms. Refugees will have more privacy here compared to other options, though the sound of the steam-powered generators on top of the building may take some getting used to. While there is heating in the winter, there are no cooling systems, with the building instead designed in a way to allow for natural airflow when all windows are opened.![]()
Hanamikoji Okiya Gion, Kyoto
Comprised of two large shared rooms, separated by men and women, these dorms are shared with the local Geiko and Hokan. All meals are provided and are shared in a large banquet hall, except on weekends, when its used for entertaining important guests and parties. While certainly one of the most unique housing options, for those struggling to integrate into life in Nippon, it's also one of the best.![]()
Student Dorms Uji, Kyoto
Located directly on the MRU's main campus, these dorms contain bunk beds and will always have two people to a room. While attempts are made to keep refugees together, it's not uncommon to wind up with a regular student as a roommate instead! A communal kitchen, bathroom, and shower room exists on each floor. Curiously, none of them are gender segregated. Each room here is fitted with its very own AC!
